PLAY GROUP
Seven years ago, two caring mothers were looking
for a play group that was relaxed, economical, and specifically
Catholic, as an alternative to other programs available. The idea
of creating the Holy Spirit Play Group began in the spring of
1992. With Fr. Toole's approval and blessing the plans were
finalized over the summer and the first term began that September.
The enrollment for the first year was 14, which was a large number
of children for a new program, still in the learning stages.
It was set up to accommodate the 3 and 4 year old
children of our parish. The play group was a cooperative program,
which meant that the mothers of the children involved each took
their turns at teaching. This turned out to be terrific for the
children, because each mother had so much to offer and the
children benefited greatly from all their experiences.
The first year turned out to be a huge success and
many of
the children came back for a second year. It was also a
great experience for the mothers involved, and many new
friendships were developed.
The program has changed little. Each year the
returning mothers take responsibility for the new term's
organization, allowing the program to continue smoothly year to
year. It still runs September to June. Like all play groups, we do
crafts, read books, play games, sing songs and have snacks. In the
spirit of a Catholic play group, we also have opening prayer,
grace before snacks, and each week has a Christian theme as well
as a related everyday theme. The highlight of our year is our
Christmas pageant.
