PASTORAL CARE

Have you ever felt a tug in your heart to minister to those who are ill or elderly? Have you heard a call to sit with those who are lonely and vulnerable?
Pastoral care is a ministry of caring. Though we cannot carry another's burden we can assist and be with them for a short period of time each week. Each month we may make 20 to 25 visits, while other visits are done by family members. We have volunteers who minister to their families and come to us for group support.

Our ministry reaches:

Those in the parish who wish Eucharistic visits

The residents at the Beverly Center, the Renoir and other nursing homes where parishioners have recently moved

Rockyview Hospital - several volunteer ministers bring Eucharist to patients, each day of the week. We help with Sunday liturgy on our designated Sunday. One person comforts patients at emergency level.

We help at the Anointing of the Sick services - Greeting cards ministry.
The bereavement group offers support and companionship to the recently bereaved - Palliative ministry, involves sitting with the dying or relieving family for breaks from being with their loved one.
We are trained volunteers with Pastoral, Palliative and Bereavement courses.

Courses

Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care is the unconditional caring response to the lonely, shut-ins, the sick and the dying to meet their spiritual needs, being respectful of their own religious beliefs and practices.  This course will introduce you to the basic visiting skills for visiting in the health car facilities or parish.  It will be advertised in advance in our parish bulletin.  See links to the right for a pamphlet information.

Palliative Care

Palliative Care is the active, compassionate care of a person whose disease is no longer responsive to traditional treatment aimed at a cure.  The goal of palliative care is to promote quality of life through the control of symptoms, whether they be physical , psychological, social or spiritual.   It will be advertised in advance in our parish bulletin.  See links to the right for a pamphlet information.

Bereavement Ministry

The Bereavement Team is a team of qualified caregivers trained in pastoral and/or palliative care who have experienced the journey of grief and loss.  The ministry  is not active at this time at Holy Spirit but courses are available at the FCJ Christian Life Centre.   See links to the right for a pamphlet information.

Holy Spirit parishioners should be reminded that our church library has many excellent resources for those who are dealing with an illness, dealing with someone who is ill, or wishing to know more about pastoral care.
