CHILDREN'S CATECHUMENATE
God continues to invite everyone to experience His
love and mercy through the Community of the Faithful or Church.
Many of us began our faith journey as infants with the Sacrament
of Baptism. Some of us are called as children or as adults. Holy
Spirit Church welcomes people of all ages to answer God's call to
community in the Rite of Christian Initiation. The Children's
Catechumenate is a community of children from ages 6-12 years who
are preparing for the Sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and
Confirmation. In 1997 Marjorie DeBoice, Coline Vos and Cathy
Bagnall attended a forum with the North American Institute on the
Catechumenate and were moved to begin a process whereby children
and their families are welcomed and initiated at the Easter Vigil.
That first year saw 20 children receive the sacraments of
initiation. The children and their families participated in the
Rite of Welcome, the Rite of Election, Scrutinies and Breaking the
Word prior to the Rite of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.
